No attempt has been made in this work to include illustrations of all types of lighting devices and related items found in America into the early part of the twentieth century. Many hundreds of examples of types originating from basic designs were created. Since many were made by the local blacksmith, tinsmith, or handyman, a basic type will show subtle or obvious variation in design and workmanship resulting in various degrees of quality.
