In excellent condition. With small (approximately 1/8 inch uneven) margins. Listed and Illustrated in Bartsch catalog raisonne and others (see description below) Rembrandt, "The Windmill" Close up of line quality Detail of pencil notation Detail of Rembrandt signature NOTES ON THIS OFFERING : This is an original etching by Rembrandt, the plate reworked by Theo Beerendonk, probably around 1960. This work was purchased from an estate in Tampa, Florida in the late 1990's. Value of this work at public auction is approximately $175 - 250. Theodorus Hendricus Johannes Beerendonk (Dutch, 1905 - 1979) was an artist and etcher, who worked on a small number of Rembrandt etching plates, publishing the post humous editions in the fashion of the earlier publishers such as Claude Henri Watelet (1768 – 1786) and Pierre Francois Basan (1789 – 1797). He was wise to make the annotation in pencil of his editions, as indisputable proof that these were of his hand (as compared with virtually all modern editions, that are heavily reworked and never annotated). Nonetheless, these later editions are still considered original works by Rembrandt, the plates coming from his own hand. In 1966 Beerendonk appointed curator at the Rembrandt House Museum in Amsterdam, where he gave demonstrations in the art of etching. His exhibitions abroad include Norway (Oslo), France (Toulouse), South Africa (Johannesburg), the former Dutch East Indies and Italy (Rome-Anzio). He was a passionate etcher, working carefully, patiently and with exceptional detail. His works are included in Several Museums include: Singer Museum, Centraal Museum Utrecht, Museo Civico Italy on the outskirts of Rome and Museum Wieger in Deurne. NOTES ON REMBRANDT : Rembrandt was born in Leyden on July 15, 1606. In 1620 he became a student at the Latin School of Leyden University, but soon gave up his formal education to enter the studio of Jacob van Swanenburch. He continued his instruction in Amsterdam with Pieter Lastman and then Jan Pynas. In 1626 he returned to Leyden, an independent master, and entered into partnership with Gerald Dou (1628). Three years later he settled in Amsterdam, where he remained until his death. In that city his first big portrait group, "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" gained him immediate recognition and a fashionable portrait following. Rembrandt, however, could not accept that sort of career and "The Night Watch", finished in 1642, aroused the hostility of his sitters.
